As one of the world’s most-renowned luxury goods brands, it’s no surprise that Goyard holds a strong legal presence when it comes to trademark infringement. News just in is that the French label is suing notorious sneaker customiser The Shoe Surgeon over the use of Goyardine Canvas, Goyard’s iconic printed leather. Also known as Dominic Ciambrone, The Shoe Surgeon has been customising sneakers for over a decade and has amassed a large fanbase in that time, however his designs often incorporate patterns or graphics from brands he’s not affiliated with. Goyard’s legal team claim that they first sent Ciambrone a cease and desist order back in 2022, which was ignored. However, designs featuring Goyard branding were quickly removed from his website.
However, just a year later, the designs reappeared on The Shoe Surgeon’s website and his social media channels. Goyard claims that it had not granted the customiser permission to use its canvas on sneakers or lighters, and that it could not confirm that materials used across the products were genuine Goyard materials. Further along in the statement, Goyard claims that The Shoe Surgeon was “riding off the fame and goodwill of Goyard’s brand”. It’s unclear exactly how this case will be resolved, but be sure to keep it locked in right here at Crepslocker, as we’ll be sharing further updates as soon as we have them.
