The Nike Air Max 1 was a big deal back in 1987. Not just because it was Nike’s latest flagship sneaker, but also because it was the first-ever sneaker to feature visible Air Max technology. While Air midsoles had featured five years prior on the Air Force 1, this was the first time ever that it was unveiled for all to see. The sneakers launched in “University Red and Sport Blue” the first time around, with these two colourways still hugely-popular and desirable today. Ever since then, the AM1 has continued to remain constant within the Swoosh’s lineup and we’ve seen thousands of great colourways and collaborations.
The Air Max 1 is arguably more popular than ever as of late, after brand-new efforts in partnership with Travis Scott and Patta have Dominated the market. But we find ourselves often asked, just how does the Air Max 1 fit? Well, we’re here to answer the question once and for all, so get ready and continue reading for all you need to know!
How Does the Air Max 1 Fit?
With the Nike Air Max 1 originally designed as a running sneaker, it doesn’t follow a chunky fit and instead opts for a slimline approach. However, it’s worth noting that the sneakers don’t fit small at all. Instead, they follow a similar fit to most other Nike shoes, meaning that they’re a true to size fit. If you own any other Nike footwear (with the exception of Air Force 1s), it’s safe to assume that you can pick up your regular size here.
Of course, if it’s possible to try on the pair of sneakers you’re intending to buy in store, we’d always advise this where possible. That way, you can be certain that the sneakers in question will definitely fit. However, if you aren’t able to get to a store it’s relatively safe to assume that you can take your regular size in the AM1, unless you have particularly wide feet.
How Does the Air Max 1 Fit Compared to Other Sneakers?
If you already own other Nikes and are looking to branch out into purchasing your first pair of Air Max 1s, you’re in luck. The good news is that the AM1 should fit exactly the same as the sneakers you already own. This isn’t without exception however, as it’s a known fact that the Nike Air Force 1 fits big. So if you own Air Force 1s that fit you well, we’d advise going up half a size from the size you own in the AF1s.
If you own luxury sneakers or most adidas models, again the Air Max 1 should fit relatively similarly. You will need to be careful if you’re comparing the Air Max 1 to Yeezy sneakers, as these have a reputation for fitting small. We recommend taking a half size down from your Yeezy size if you’re searching for a similar fit.
How to Style the Air Max 1?
Being a retro sneaker, you’d think that the Air Max 1 might be limited to the sort of outfits it works with, however this is not the case. Due to the timeless nature of the design, it works with a plethora of different options and styles, meaning that it’s well worth investing in a pair of AM1s for your collection. We’d recommend rocking it in the summer months with shorts, as the athletic stylings seen throughout the design work perfectly with this type of ‘fit. Round off the combination with a graphic T-shirt and accessorise with items such as a hat and sunglasses.
If shorts are off the cards, you can always rely on a pair of baggy cargo pants to pair with your Air Max 1s. These are also a great option for the colder months, where you can finish your outfit with a hoodie and parka jacket for a no-nonsense streetwear look that will be both stylish and comfortable.
What Are the Best Air Max 1 Colourways?
There’s been countless Air Max 1s launched over the years, which makes picking some favourite colourways harder than ever before. However, it’s worth noting that in terms of general releases, nothing comes close to the OG “University Red” and “Sport Blue” colourways. Of course, there have been some other gems as well, such as the “Curry” pair and the “Watermelon” pair!
There have also been some incredible collaborations that have used the AM1 as inspiration, such as the highly-coveted atmos x Nike AM1 “Elephant” and the “Viotech” rendition from the same retailer. There’s also been some impressive efforts from the likes of Concepts, Huf and Patta.
