First introduced in 1982, the Nike Air Force 1 was designed by Bruce Kilgore and is perhaps the most popular Swoosh silhouette of all time. We’ve seen thousands of different colourways launch over the years, as well as collaborations with the likes of Off-White, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany. However, news just in is that Nike is looking to reduce production numbers when it comes to the Air Force 1. While this move may come as a shock to many, it seems that the Beaverton brand has good reasons for this decision. During a Nike earnings call last week, Nike’s CFO Matt Friend stated that the brand would simply be scaling back AF1 production in order to put more focus on other silhouettes and offerings.
The brand also stated that it had seen an increase in “promotional activity” regarding the AF1, meaning that there has been an increasing number of pairs ending up reduced. It’s thought that this change will most likely affect Nike’s D2C (direct to consumer) model, meaning that retailers will likely still hold significant AF1 stock.
